You don’t want to start a kitchen-remodeling venture without making financial arrangements or at least drawing up a budget plan for the mission first. Perhaps you have even been excited about it for a while now, with the kids jumping all over the place, reminding you of your plans all the time. The time has come for you to sit down and actually draw up a cost statement that will help you prepare for this capital-intensive expenditure.

If you are going to be kitchen remodeling, you will certainly need a new floor. The old one is cracked and stained, and the harder you scrub, the worse it actually becomes. You will need ceramic or marble tiles that are easier to clean than even the old plastic ones.

You may also want to have the heating/cooling system in your kitchen updated or replaced. Changing the air filters may not cost a whole lot, but you may want to write that down too because the filters do need to be changed monthly, or at least as often as the manufacturer tells you. You do know that the kitchen filters are some of the most overworked in the house.

Adjusting the plumbing of your kitchen is almost a certainty if you are going to remodel the space. You may want the tap and sink in another place, or raised or lowered, as the case may be. The pricing of this sub-project may not really be something you can draw up for yourself since you are no professional. However you can have a plumber come in and take a look at it.

That, along with the pricing for a new sink, should be listed. If you are changing the look of the walls, you are sure to need some ceramic tiles there as well. They don’t cost too much, but you have to take into consideration how many walls you want covered, and how many dozen-wall tiles you will have to buy.

Restaurant equipment and supplies are one of the biggest expenses that you will incur during start up. Not only that, restaurant equipment and supplies selection is also a complex process since different kinds of restaurants require different things. The best place to begin your search is to visit food service equipment dealers. However, since many food equipment dealers now take advantage of the Internet, you can start by going online and check online equipment dealers that offer quality and affordable restaurant equipment and supplies.

Basically, some of the restaurant equipment that you will need includes bakery equipment, bar equipment, refrigeration, ice machines, steam equipment, coffee and tea equipment, service kitchen, ventilation equipment, dishwashers, and dining area equipment. You needs will depend on the kind of restaurant that you will open and on the budget that you have.

Aside from restaurant equipment, you will also be needing restaurant supplies such as kitchen supplies like cutting boards, mashers, measuring cups, measuring spoons, pan grates, peelers, tongs, and whips, bakery supplies, bar supplies, cookware sets, and cutlery. These are essential in preparing your recipes and when serving your dishes to your guests.

The earliest restaurants were mostly inns that catered to tourists who would stop over during their journeys. Since then, the food service industry has come a long way as commercial enterprises. Adequate changes have been incorporated in the art of restaurant management keeping in mind changing times, demand, needs and tastes of customers. Earlier, restaurant owners did not have to undertake adequate planning as they simply offered a menu based upon available supplies. Nowadays it is unthinkable for restaurants to be unable to provide everything that is printed on a menu card. It is imperative for restaurants to work efficiently by stocking restaurant equipment and supplies to face every customer demand. Restaurant equipment is needed to prepare, store and serve food and beverages.

Restaurant equipment and supplies include products that are needed for food preparation, preservation, storage and consumption. To function competently, restaurants require good management and adequate supplies and equipments. Supplies such as refrigerators, food processors, dishwashers and cutlery need to be maintained and repaired regularly. This will prevent sudden breakdown of equipment that can cause spoilage and result in losses.

Your kitchen is a very important part of your home. Chances are you will spend a lot of time there. Consequently, most people invest a lot of money to make their kitchen beautiful as well as useful.

Kitchen Lighting Fixture Requirements

The lighting requirements for your kitchen are vastly different from the needs of your other rooms. In most cases this design requirement is ignored by people. Most people simply install lighting that will perform the requirements of lighting the room. However, this can be problematic due to the fact that the kitchen is not just a typical room in your home. You can use the kitchen as a place for you to relax, or as a place to entertain your guests. The ultimate goal you must have when choosing the lighting in your kitchen is to make the most out of the space you have, regardless of how you want to use the room.

Possibilities

One possibility for your kitchen is to create a dramatic look. Since most people generally install only direct lighting in their kitchens, adding an indirect light source will add a unique touch to the room. Indirect lighting can be achieved by placing light sources in places that cannot be seen. The light from these hidden light fixtures is then reflected from the walls and ceilings to create a soft, subdued look in the room. In these cases, the light source is usually hidden at the top of the kitchen cabinets, or behind appliances.

Placement of direct lighting is easier to figure out than indirect lighting fixtures. Unlike indirect lighting, which must be carefully placed, direct lighting is usually more centralized and easily seen. Using light from a conventional light fixture, as well as fancy chandeliers, are some of your options. Some people also find the use of lighting from ceiling fans to be a good alternative.

Using the Right Bakeware?

Bakeware is such an integral part of your kitchen that you probably don’t think twice about whether you are using the right pans for your cakes and loaves. Instead of substituting the bakeware recommended in recipes with whatever you have, why not make sure you have the right cookware for the right item? In this article, we will talk about the various sizes and categories of bakeware, so look no further.

When you are following a recipe that requires you to use bakeware, the first thing to determine is whether you have the proper size pans. For instance, your recipe suggests that you use a pan of a certain size, if you do not have it, you can generally substitute a similar size baking pan without any problem. But take the following into account:

Bakeware Pan Basics

Select a pan as close in size as possible to the pan in your recipe. In other words, the volume capacity should be approximately the same and when filled, the ingredients should reach about the same depth as they would in the original. The biggest advantage of choosing a substitute bakeware pan similar in size to the original is that the cooking temperatures and times remain the same.

When measuring a pan, measure from inside edge to inside edge so that you are not including the thickness of the sides.

Measure volume by filling the pan with water and then pouring it into a measuring cup.
Be careful substituting a pan when the recipe indicates that a tube pan should be used, such as an angel food cake pan or a bundt pan. These pans are ideal when it comes to equal distribution of heat, so the substitute bakeware pan must satisfy that criterion.

If you select a glass bakeware pan or a dark, non-stick pan, reduce the oven temperature by at least 25°F.

If the substitute pan causes the depth of the ingredients to be thinner, reduce cooking time by 15 minutes. If the depth is thicker, increase cooking time by 15 minutes.

Whenever you select a substitute pan, keep in mind that you need to allow room for certain foods to expand as they cook.

PAN MATERIALS & HOW TO CARE FOR THEM

A pan is a pan is a pan, right? Wrong. Baking pans can be made from different materials, and each material has a different effect on your baking. For example, a bakeware pan with a dark-colored surface will cause the food to brown more easily because it absorbs the heat of the oven. On the other hand, an aluminum bakeware pan conducts heat evenly but its surface reflects heat, so the food does not brown well. So here’s a list of some common bakeware materials:

Aluminum

Aluminum is good bakeware material because it is an excellent conductor of heat and so your baking is uniform, but the shiny surface of aluminum bakeware prevents proper browning, as we explained. Aluminum bakeware is durable and will not rust, but go for heavy-gauge aluminum bakeware rather than the thinner variety. The latter may warp when exposed to high temperatures, causing uneven baking. Also remember that aluminum bakeware should NOT be used to prepare acidic foods because the acid may react with the material to create food that has an off taste. It may also cause more wear and tear than usual.

Care: Use hot soapy water for ordinary cleaning of your aluminum bakeware, but for extra cleaning, a nylon scouring pad or special powder cleansers can be used

Electric Range and Gas Range

With the many modern improvements in technology, kitchen appliances have greatly changed over time, becoming more and more efficient. In general, becoming undeniably better. However, there is still a debate between old versus new when it comes to gas ranges and electric ranges. Which one is really better? There are advantages and disadvantages to each. Just as beauty is in the eye of the beholder, the truth about ranges may well be all in the experience of the cook.

Let us first take a look at a gas range. Gas is expensive, yet the burner on a stove cooks food so well. The flame can be adjusted for a low simmer or a boil. If the power goes out, you can still use it. The heat from the oven fills the room when you open it. If there is anything wrong, there are tell tale signs that warns us. The smell of gas or out of control flames, or no flame at all are fair warnings that something is wrong. Food can be cooked with ease over the fire. The trouble could be that sometimes the pilot light may go out, and we have to light a match or get a lighter to start it up again. There is always a chance of a fire.

An electric range is very different. Electricity costs money, too, but not as much as gas. You can adjust the temperature pretty specifically on the over or burners. The very accurate temperature control is a plus. Lowering the time it takes to cook things helps keep the nutrients in, and saves us time. Many coil style burners will turn bright red to warn us of the intense heat. Unfortunately, if the power goes out, so does the stove. The warmth from the oven may not be as intense as the flame of a gas range, but that can be good or bad. Newer, flat surface version of the electric range allow for very easy cleaning. There is a much less chance of a fire developing with this type of range.

It really depends on the person, but I’m a fan of the electric range. It costs less to maintain, has better temperature control, and is easier to clean.

Ignore all those infomercials for fancy (and essentially useless) kitchen gadgets. Instead, you should spend your time and effort on choosing the perfect kitchen mixer. A kitchen mixer is one of those appliances that every serious cook needs. A good stand mixer can save you hours of work in the kitchen doing a huge variety of kitchen jobs. No cook should be without one.

But not all kitchen mixers are created equal, and having a low-quality stand mixer can be almost as bad as not having one at all. Like other appliances, good quality stand mixers are a great investment, as these machines can last for years– even decades. If you spend the time and money finding the perfect one, you won’t have to worry about buying another for a very long time.

There are several things you should look at when shopping for a new kitchen mixer. There is price and quality, of course, but you should also consider things like speed & controls, capacity, attachments, and add-on options.

Speed and Controls

In general, stand mixers have anywhere from 3 to 15 speeds. The more speeds your mixer has, the more flexible it will be in its uses and the more control you will have with mixing.

There are several kinds of controls that come standard on kitchen mixers. Probably the most common is the dial control. This adjusts speed more gradually, allowing you to go from low to high as you choose. You may also find stand mixers with slide controls, pushbuttons (as on a standard blender), and switches. The newest kitchen mixers are controlled with a touchpad, and have a digital display panel. These look great, but are not so different from standard controls. One new innovation in these types of mixers that you may want to opt for, however, is a timer. This has a countdown on a digital display, and will shut down automatically after a certain pre-programmed time.

Capacity

A basic stand mixer will have the capacity to mix one batch of cookie or bread dough. Many other models, however, are sold with two different sized bowls, allowing the capacity to be adjusted to many different recipes. Though standard bowls are generally the size of a medium mixing bowl, kitchen mixer work bowls can have anywhere from a 1.5 to 7 quart capacity.

Most apartment kitchens are already supplied with stoves and refrigerators included. However, if you need a new stove, microwave, or refrigerator there are many types of such appliances that are good buys, you just need to know what brand, size, and type etc. that you need. Here are some ideas to get you started if you are looking for new stoves, refrigerators, microwaves or other kitchen appliances:

* Refrigerators:

Refrigerators are essential kitchen appliances

§ The most popular and convenient refrigerators are side-by-side as opposed to the actual fridge part being on the bottom and the freezer on top or vice versa.

§ Water and ice dispensers on the outside of the door are a very nice touch that make water and, if you choose, ice water easily accessible.

§ There are even refrigerators, such as ones GE has designed, that are shallower in depth than traditional model refrigerators, which making it much easier to seek and reach for things stored at the back of fridge. As you probably know, food can go bad way back there, usually because you never see it when you look around for something to eat.

And of course, there are much smaller refrigerators that are not so much kitchen appliances as they are conveniences for the office, dorm rooms or recreational vehicles etc. These items are very handy in a lot of ways, and designed especially for the purposes I just mentioned. Virtually all kitchen appliance manufacturers offer such items.

· The dishwasher:

Most dishwashers come with push button controls or simple to use dials in the front. Dishwashers in general are fairly accessible appliances, but sometimes you will want to do a little research on the reliability of such kitchen appliances before purchasing your dishwasher.

Dishwashers are usually at least 34″ high and will fit perfectly beneath a standard 36″ high counter. Unfortunately, standards kitchen appliances do not work for everybody.

For example:

Some people are very tall and have trouble bending. In these cases the person should try to have a higher dishwasher installed, (and often will have higher counters as well). This approach will make their experience in their kitchens a whole lot less painful—and such accommodations for the installation of kitchen appliances is sometimes even doctor recommended.

For another example:

People who use wheelchairs often find it easier and more accessible to have a kitchen counter that has provides space underneath it so that they can pull their wheelchair right up to the counter like a chair. Thus the size of the dishwasher they choose to purchase will have to be carefully considered.
