Hockey sticks come in different sizes, compositions, and materials. Choosing the best combination is vital to staying comfortable throughout the game without sacrificing performance. Here are some of important factors to consider when buying a hockey stick:

Size

Hockey sticks come in junior and senior sizes. Junior hockey sticks are about 46 to 54 inches long, while senior hockey sticks measure 56 to 62 inches. The slanted end usually extends 10 to 15 centimeters from the shaft. Generally, shorter sticks offer better control, but longer ones make more powerful hits.

Stiffness

The shaft also has different flex or stiffness levels, classified as medium, stiff and extra stiff. Forward players usually prefer more flexible shafts, while defensemen can play better with stiff shafts. If you’re a beginner, start with a medium shaft and move to stiffer ones as you get better.

Lie

The lie is the angle between the shaft and the blade. This is measured with the numbers 4 to 8; the smaller the lie number, the wider the angle. Use a lower lie stick if you prefer to skate close to the ground with the puck in front.

Materials

Wood. Wooden hockey sticks are usually stiff and heavy, so they are best for strong players. They also tend to break more easily.

Fiberglass. These hockey sticks have a wooden core with a fiberglass coating, making them a lot heavier than other composites. They are the cheapest but least durable, making them ideal for practice but not for actual games.

Aluminum. Aluminum sticks have an aluminum shaft with replaceable blades. They are lighter than fiberglass and wood but heavier than Kevlar and titanium. They are ideal for those with various blade preferences.

Graphite. Graphite hockey sticks can be made of pure graphite, have a wooden core and graphite coating, or a composite of graphite and Kevlar. They are more expensive than fiberglass and aluminum, and are relatively lightweight and durable.

Kevlar. Kevlar is made from aramid fibers, either pure or mixed with graphite. They are light and highly durable, but they are the most expensive.

Titanium. Titanium sticks cost about the same as Kevlar. They are lightweight and highly durable, and usually have replaceable blades that can also be installed with torches.

Hockey skates are important in the game of ice hockey. They have a key role in giving stability and turning ability in the game. Hockey skates comprise two basic parts, the boot and the blade. The boots are generally made of molded plastic, leather and ballistic nylon. Boots made with a combination of leather and synthetic materials have durability, better performance standard and comfort. Hard plastic boots protect against pucks and provide more support for your ankles. The hockey skate blades are made of durable steel, which is immensely strong, hard and resistant to wear. Hockey skate blades have a concave shape. The radius of the blade is also an important factor that decides performance.

There are certain things to bear in mind before you spend money on a new pair of ice hockey skates. The shops offer two categories of hockey skates based on the level of play. They recommend recreational hockey skates for those who enjoy ice skating as an occasional pastime. These kinds of skates feature a fully lined upper and tongue with cushy foam padding for proper ankle support. For amateur hockey players, the shops provide hockey skates based on the level of hardness of the boot.

Unlike other shoes, hockey skates should fit properly. There are a number of highly engineered hockey skate brands in a wide price range. There are several models of hockey skates available in the market to accommodate different levels of skating and the different physical sizes of skaters. Based on these models, price and stiffness of hockey skates vary. Purchasing hockey skates online is difficult. Because, size and fitness are important factors, these should be considered at the time of purchase. It is advisable to buy hockey skates from a local shop than ordering them online.

If you are a new hockey fan, you may not be aware of the differences between Olympic hockey and NHL hockey. Even though these two organizations were founded at around the same time in the early 1900’s and the essential principles of the game are the same, the rules for the two are not exactly the same. If you understand the differences between Olympic hockey and NHL hockey, when you watch you will be able to enjoy the games more because you will not be confused by the differences.

Here are some of the key differences between Olympic hockey and the NHL: 1. The ice size: The Olympic hockey rink is over 3,000 square feet bigger. It is longer, wider, and has more space between the goal and the end boards. This minimizes the amount of checking that occurs in Olympic matches.

2. Penalty shots: In Olympic hockey, any player from the team can shoot a penalty shot whether they were the penalty victim or not. However, the victim must shoot the penalty shot in the NHL.

3. Fighting: Although this seems to be an important part of any hockey game, in Olympic hockey those who fight are given a match penalty and are ejected. In the NHL, players are put in a penalty box for 5 minutes and then they are allowed to play again.

4. Shootout: A shootout is only used in regular season play in the NHL-they choose three players from each team to break the tie. During the playoffs, however, the teams play in overtime until one team scores the winning goal. In Olympic hockey, if the score is tied, there is a sudden death overtime period of 10 minutes. If the score remains tied, then a shootout is held with 5 players from each team.

5. Icing: In the NHL, icing is only called after a player shoots down the ice from their team’s side of the center line and it crosses the goal line and an opposing team’s player touches it. Meanwhile, in the Olympics, no player from any team has to touch the puck before icing is called.

6. Obstruction: While the NHL rules on fighting are more lenient than the Olympics, their rules on things like holding, hooking and interference are tougher. The international hockey community is implementing stricter rules as well in order to better protect players.

Hockey fights are often misunderstood, but they are an accepted part of the game. They are not approved of, nor discouraged. The practice of fighting in hockey is permitted by many of the world’s professional men’s leagues, including the National Hockey League. But, it is not allowed in women’s hockey at any level.

Hockey fights are more of a sideshow than a genuine display of emotion and intensity. Sometimes, the fighting goes beyond control. In most cases, players who fight are penalized equally or and may be ejected.

Most of the hockey lovers love to watch fights at hockey games. They know that the game involves considerable body contact and occasional fighting. These fights serve many purposes in the game. The main purpose is to protect their own team members. Hockey players fight each other to mark their territory to show ownership of the game. The dropping of the gloves and the sticks is the first signal that fighting has begun. The fighter who defeated the other is the winner.

Both teams keep sturdy players as enforcers to offend the opponents. They are designated players to fight in the middle of the game. The enforcer’s role is generally to engage the offending or provoking the opponent into a fight. They are well paid and they know how to fight and entertain the spectators.

Although hockey fights are brutal and uncoordinated, they play a legitimate role in keeping certain players’ behavior in line. It can settle scores and revenge the proper way. The National Hockey League, American Hockey League, ECHL, and other notable minor leagues have rules regarding penalties for such infractions. Despite the terrible consequences of the hockey fights, most of the hockey game lovers consider fighting skill as a measure of all-around hockey talent.

Hockey equipment includes all the equipment, gear and clothing necessary for hockey players to have when playing the game of hockey. Earlier players used to wear a woolen turtleneck and a pair of boots. Now with increased technological advancements, hockey equipment and clothing have improved. These improvements have increased the speed and intensity of the game, as well as the safety of the players.

For a hockey match, the most basic thing required is an oval shaped ice rink. These rinks can be natural or constructed manually using huge freezers. The other equipment used by players includes pucks, skates and hockey sticks. Safety equipment like goalie masks, helmets, gloves and padding provide protection to the players.

Early ice hockey players would strap blades onto their boots to play the game. Nowadays, skates come in a one-piece design with permanently attached steel blades. Hockey sticks were originally made from wood, but today are made of carbon and Kevlar. Some players say the space age material gives more power to shots, while others think that it is fragile and expensive. The carved blade of the stick provides more power and lift to the shots .It was first developed in 1960 and is the standard design today. The puck is a flat and round piece of hard rubber used to score goals. It is frozen before play to prevent it from bouncing during play.

The game of hockey is very popular in North America, Canada and several European countries. With an increase in the popularity of the game and various professional teams, the demand for hockey equipment has also increased. Today, many people are buying it for personal us, but also because they can be collectible pieces of sports memorabilia.

From the days when players wore simple woolen sweaters, hockey equipment has come a long way. The designs of this equipment are always being updated, as well. The equipment manufacturers are witnessing increased sales, especially during hockey championships such as the Stanley Cup. With the increased popularity of the game, the demand is expected to grow even further.

In the Canadian junior ice hockey system almost every young player dreams about one day making it to the National Hockey League.

When you do a fast count in your head you soon realize that there are a huge number of guys playing junior hockey in Canada. You also soon realize that very few of these ice hockey players actually will make it to the National Hockey League.

This article will focus on all those ice hockey players that do not make it directly to the NHL.

These players have to prove themselves in the minor hockey system, before a few of them head up to the NHL where they want to play.

The minor hockey leagues are as follows:

At the level below the National Hockey League you find the American Hockey League and here most of the players have NHL contracts. It is good ice hockey with many good players.

Players that do not make the American Hockey League find themselves looking for a job in the minor leagues at the level below. A few of these leagues are East Coast Hockey League, Central Hockey League and the United Hockey League.

As you understand the players do not make as much money in the minors as they do in the NHL and life is tougher as well.

You still play about 70 to 80 games a season in the minors and it is very rare that teams at this level travel by plane. So, if you do not know how to sleep on a bus, you better learn. Fast!

A game day in the life of a minor league ice hockey player could look like this:

You wake up at around eight, have breakfast and arrive at the rink at nine. At the rink you make sure that your equipment is OK and you get ready for the mandatory pre-game skate.

Probably you are hoping for that the coach doesn’t have a bad day and skate you too hard. Even though a hard skate has not hurt anybody, very few players enjoy this.

After the morning skate, you shower, get dressed and head for a pre-game meal at a greasy restaurant. The food could probably be better, but who cares.

After lunch it is back to the rink, pack up the bus, watch two movies and four hours later it is time to prepare for tonight’s game.

When you get out of the area after the game it is already dark and you watch two more movies on your way back home. You hit the sack at 2.30 AM and if you lost the game you know that it will not be fun at practice tomorrow morning.

Among various kinds of sports there are some which are definitely associated with each country. Hockey is the game that Canadian are most passionate about, and most sports fans would agree it is Canada which can be associated with hockey. The game of hockey was invented in Canada and is definitely the country most important contribution to the world of sports.

The first game was splayed in Montreal in 1879 by McGill University students. Today it is played professionally in over twenty countries. There are a number of local, provincial and national amateur hockey teams across the country. It is also quite a common for people to play what are referred to as pick up games just for fun. The wooden side boards of outdoor rinks smack with slap shots for most of the winter months. And winter weekends for many families across the country mean five to six am time slots for children hockey teams at local arenas. It is more than a pastime it is a way of life. Children dream of being on a Stanley Cup winning National Hockey League (NHL) team some day.

The Stanley Cup was donated by Canadian Governor general Frederick Arthur, Lord Stanley of Preston in 1892 to be given annually to the best Canadian hockey team. Today both American and Canadian hockey teams, members of the NHL which was formed in 1917 compete each season for the Stanley Cup trophy.

Hockey starts are more than famous athletes, they are Canadian legends. Names of legendary hockey players have become the part of Canadian history.
